  • Why are the dates in the ZIP files not correct when I view them from WinZip?

  • We wanted to make WestNet Backup portable: it must work on both Windows and UNIX.  That's why the date format is a little different from a standard ZIP format for DOS (Windows). We use the UNIX format of the date.

WestNet Backup works with this date format without any problems.  Other programs (like WinZip) show the wrong date, but when they unzip files, the date is of no importance.  This is not a bug, it is just a peculiar little feature of WestNet Backup.

  • Why instead of one backup archive I found in the target folder many files with "...zip.zNNN" and "...zip.cat" extensions?

  • When WestNet Backup backs up, it makes a few backup archives because that allows to span backup on a few media and to increase reliability and speed of restore process.

ZIP format does not support native spanning and that's why WestNet Backup makes a few small volumes. Each ".zNNN" files is a volume. Don't worry, it's a standard ZIP file, but it contains only a part of backed up files. Click here to read more about splitters. Restore wizard automatically works with them and you don't need to know anything else about it.  This is a normal situation.

  • To move WestNet Backup to a different computer you have to:

    1. Save your current repair information under "File -> Save/Restore repair information...". We recommend to save it on a floppy disk.
    2. Install the latest version of WestNet Backup on a target computer. You can download it at http://www.kiesoft.com.
    3. Restore the saved repair information under "File -> Save/Restore repair information..."
    4. Apply your registration key.

As a result you will have all your Backup Sets and encryption keys. If you need to restore files, do it as usual. But all backups will be full at the first time (Because repair information does not have big local catalogs files you need to do incremental backups). If you do not want to do full backups again you have to copy "C:\Program Files\EB\Catalogs" folder from the sourse to the target computer.

But do not delete any files from your sourse computer until you are not sure that everything was moved OK.
